Most devices can be used with WebRTC applications, such as ipDTL. On certain devices, only input channels 1 and 2 will be routed to the browser app. Make sure you are sending a mix-minus.

Most professional audio interfaces use USB to connect to the computer, but many other types of sound device can also be selected in ipDTL.

Your choice of microphone and/or sound interface is crucial to the audio quality of ipDTL. The on-board sound-card in most PCs will produce unwanted noise.

'Mix-minus' is an output from a sound board which includes the audio from all input channels except for the equipment you are sending it to. It is important not to send a talent's own voice back to their headphones as there will be a slight delay, but they still need to hear other input channels and talkback.

This will happen if the other user does not send a 'mix-minus' from their sound board. You should always use headphones rather than speakers.

The sample rate is determined by your computer's default audio device setting. We advise setting all audio software and hardware to 48000Hz, to avoid any conflict with ipDTL.

• Go to System Preferences.
• Select ‘Sound’.
• Choose ‘Input’ and then select the correct device from the list.
• Adjust the slider as required.

The level to and from some audio devices can be far too high by default - your computer is probably set at 100%.

• Microsoft seem keen to hide these settings. You're looking for 'Sounds' or 'Sound Control Panel'.
• In the ‘Recording’ tab, double-click the appropriate device.
• In the ‘Levels’ tab, adjust the slider down to a level where the audio does not distort. This can be as low as ’3′.
• Adjust the slider as required.

Probably. Particularly aggressive firewalls or anti-virus software can cause a problem.

Mobile broadband is shared with people around you. There’s no way to get guaranteed bandwidth and you never know when your fast connection will drop-off / deteriorate. Using mobile broadband for ipDTL will give unpredictable results. If possible, find a wired connection.

The system will try to establish a ‘point-to-point’ connection between two computers. If NAT configuration prevents this, audio streams are sent via one of our relay servers in the cloud.
